FROM THE DESK OF DR. M...

Heading into the holiday season of Christmas, Chanukah, and New Year’s, means that many people will be traveling by plane. In this issue, we address the needs of those who travel to work by plane, even if only occasionally, and those going on vacation.

In the feature article, I talk about air travel and highlight some of the things that make it easier.

In the health section, nine tips are outlined to help keep you on top of your game, whether going to work or vacation.

In cost cutter, I tell you about a very neat e-book I read that will help you save money on air fare. I’ve even been able to save you some money on its cost.

In Something to Think About, I stopped at six great quotes on flying. There were more, but I resisted. Take a look and see if you can remember your first flight. Was it like my son’s, awe inspiring?

Days after we returned home, we saw a plane overhead. I asked him if he’d like to fly again. He said, “Yes, mommy, but can you ask the pilot to fly lower this time?”

I think he captured what most of us feel about flying- awe and fear. I hope this issue moves you to more awe and less fear.

Just a reminder: 20 days ‘til Christmas. Keep the “reason for the season” in your heart.

Be well!
Dr. M.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT

"The airplane. If you think about it too long, you will never set foot in one- it defies the law of gravity. Yet millions of us, from every walk of life, suspend judgment to enter this world of wonder.

The first time my son flew at age five, he peered out the widow, trying to see under the plane and asked, “But Mommy, what’s holding it up?!”

Lovers of air travel find it exhilarating to hang poised between the illusion of immortality and the fact of death."
~ Alexander Chase, 'Perspectives,' 1966

"It is as though we have grown wings, which thanks to Providence, we have learnt to control."
~ Louis Blériot, 'Atlantic Monoplanes of tomorrow.'

"The Wright Brothers created the single greatest cultural force since the invention of writing. The airplane became the first World Wide Web, bringing people, languages, ideas, and values together."
~ Bill Gates, CEO, Microsoft Corporation

"The modern airplane creates a new geographical dimension. A navigable ocean of air blankets the whole surface of the globe. There are no distant places any longer: the world is small and the world is one."
~ Wendell Willkie

"We want the air to unite the peoples, and not to divide them."
~ Lord Swinton

"Unlike the boundaries of the sea by the shorelines, the "ocean of air" laps at the border of every state, city, town and home throughout the world."
~ Welch Pogue

FEATURE ARTICLE

Commuting by Air

Commuting by air is becoming more popular each year. In private twin engines, corporate jets and commercial airlines, people are traveling to get to work and play.

For some, like Marilee Johnson, an administrative assistant and her boss, John Sibold, who both work for Washington State Department of Transportation, the short flight from their home town to their work beats driving and helps them start the day in an upbeat mood. They fly Johnson’s plane whenever they can. They don’t have to fight the highway or air traffic that has developed around some metropolitan areas. They are part of the new move to “plane pool.” Thousands of people around the globe are pooling their resources so they can fly to work and vacations in their own planes.

No schedule to meet but their own, no lines to walk through, no crowds to jostle them. How nice. You know their commute related stress level is low, if it can be measured at all.

Others fly corporate jets to meetings and just have to be focused on work, not on getting there.

Most, however, use commercial airlines and share the stresses of all long distance commuters. Checking the weather for possible delays, the roads for traffic to the airport, the bags for anything forgotten, the pockets for money, credit cards and airline tickets, we take off from home or hotel.

Preparation is the most important step to lowering the stress of long distance travel. Having lists of what you need and checking off what you have in your case eliminates your need to remember and ticks stress a bit lower.

A good night’s sleep before take off gives us more energy to handle the logistics of travel.

Keeping a sense of humor as we go through the process of check in and boarding will ease us and probably those around us.

Everyone has their own horror stories about flying. After the fact, most of them are funny. But while you’re going through them, they are true horrors that seem to have no ending.

This is where the relaxation and other thought control techniques we use at Commuter-Assist are so useful. Do review them before flying and use them often.

No article about flying would be complete without noting that terrorism still affects us all when flying. Using the three S’s will help- Stay alert, Stay calm, Stay sane.

Stay alert to your surroundings and report anything that is amiss. Like the civilian plane spotters in World War 2, we must be involved in the fight against terrorism.

Stay calm so that you can be alert to your surroundings, but also so that you make the correct judgments and can enjoy the privilege of flying. Nothing is to be gained from upset.

Stay sane. The last thing a terrorist wants is sanity. Terror is predicated on making you lose your sanity, your calm and your self-control. Just the threat is enough for them to gain their goal.

We live in a dangerous world. Our goal is to have an inner peace follow us through our days. It is possible, even in a dangerous world.

COST CUTTERS

The Costs for Air Travel

Air travel can be very expensive.  It can also be very frustrating, especially when you find that the person sitting next to you paid less than half of what you paid or is in first class because of an upgrade.

There are ways to save money on airline tickets, if we only knew how.

I thought I was being fiscally responsible when I started to use services like Expedia and Priceline, but there are better ways to cut even more of the cost.

I tripped upon this when I needed to make a hotel reservation.  Missing the cut-off at an online repackager site, I called the hotel myself and was shocked to get a quote significantly lower than the one I missed out on with the repackager.

I didn’t, however, put it all together until I recently read Tom Foley’s new e-book, Flights Save:  The Guide to Getting a Great Deal on Travel.  The e-book describes the best ways to use frequent flyer miles, how to get upgrades, how to get great deals from the airlines themselves, etc.

Why not join your favorite airline’s traveler’s club?  This is the way to travel, and it’s not just for the rich and well traveled.  Flights Save gives you the reason to join and the links to the clubs.  This is on my to do list.

There is a section on  becoming a courier in order to get very inexpensive or free flights.  I have a lawyer friend who has traveled around the world using this technique.  He uses it to go to conferences and on vacation because he can’t understand the high price of flying.  Of course, I have challenged his fee structure, but that is for another issue.

The e-book is priced at $35.00, but Tom has agreed to lower it to $19.97 for my membership only.  It will only be at this price for the next 48 hours, though. He has agreed to give a one week guarantee at this low price.

You can get it at www.e-junkie.com but first go to http://www.discountflightworld.com and read the information  about the e-book and confirm the usual price.

I am grateful to him for this reduction because this is something we all can use.  Once we understand the system, we can use the information over and over again.

I hope you take him up on his offer.  And do write how it’s helped and I’ll pass it on to him.

I’ve asked Tom to write a bit about his e-book.  It’s reprinted below:

One of the most important things when you are booking your flight is to make sure that you are getting the best deal. The airlines make millions and millions of dollars by people accepting the deals that they are given. But if you know how to get the best deal, you will be able to make great savings on flights and never pay the full cost again.

The airlines usually get the full price because people are not willing, don’t know how, or do not have the time, to look for the best way to cut their costs. But it is possible to drive down the cost of your airfares if you know how to do it. There are a lot of programmes, such as AIRMILES, that people use to try to get a reduction on their flight, but they do not usually seem to cut the cost that much, or the airlines would not use them. But if you use them properly and choose the right ones, then you are able to get very cheap flights.

And AIRMILES are not the only way to do this. If you know the right techniques then you will never pay the full price for an airfare again. Learn all of these techniques in the new e-book Flights Save:  The Guide to Getting a Great Deal on Travel. You can find it here

But there is no need to pay the full price. We have arranged a special price for members of Commuter-Assist so that you make a massive saving and you can discover how to get cheap or even free flights for only $19.97 instead of the usual price of $35.00.

This offer will only be available for the next 48 hours so if you want to use these techniques then you need to get it now.

With this e-book you will learn every possible way to save on air travel. This includes the best way to use the techniques to get the maximum savings from them and cut your costs by hundreds of dollars.

One customer of the book sent this testimonial:

"This book is truly amazing, I can’t believe some of the ways that you can fly, one particular method in your book looks to save me $700 on my next roundtrip ticket, I couldn’t have done it without your e-book." Mitch Mauldin

You will discover the best way to get the most from these techniques and be able to save hundreds of dollars on the usual prices. And what's more, you will be able to use these links and techniques over and over, so you need never pay the full price again.

The book is full of links so that you are able to go straight to the right places to sign up for these and many more money saving offers.

Getting cheaper flights is not hard most, if not all, of the time -  if you know the right simple techniques.

This offer is only available at this special price for the next 48 hours. After that it will only be available at the usual price of $35.00. So, if you want to discover how to fly cheap or free on every flight that you take, then you need to order it now for this great saving and to save even more every time you travel.

HEALTH TIPS

Air Travel and Your Health

Flying can take a toll on the commuter.  Whether flying for business or pleasure, there are certain “rules” that have been developed over time that can make it a bit easier on the body and the soul.

Here is a list, not in any particular order, that should help:

1)  Preparation is the key to an easy flight.  Frequent flyers need a ready pack with personal items like tooth brush and other care products, sleepwear, writing tools, rain gear, etc.,  that they can just up and leave with.

2)  Having a good night’s sleep before a flight will give you the energy you need to resist upset, anger and the fatigue of waiting on lines.  Remember that when there are crowds of people, it is almost certain that difficult situations will arise and if you are not involved in the problem, you will be an observer, and that itself can be upsetting.

3)  Giving yourself extra time to get to the airport and to your gate will give you a relaxed feeling.

4)  Expecting some delay will lower anger and upset because you are mentally prepared.

5)  Plan on some down time when you arrive at your destination.  A few hours to gather yourself before a meeting will certainly have a positive effect.  I know of one world traveler who takes a swim upon arriving at his hotel and schedules his meetings afterward.

6)  Jet lag can occur when biological rhythms are disrupted because of travel across several time zones.  NASA states that to regain normal rhythm and energy, one day per one hour time zone is needed.

7)  Be aware of fluid intake in flight since flying is dehydrating.  Also be aware that alcohol has a greater effect on the body while flying.

8)  Bring some of home with you.  A framed photo of loved ones, your favorite pillow, a lucky talisman, can blunt the loneliness of being away from home.

9)  Some things should not come with you.  Valuable jewelry, original papers, anything irreplaceable should stay safely home.

Learning to take things in stride and being prepared will make your trip better.  This is true whether you are flying for pleasure or work.
